The new coach of Anthony Joshua has issued a challenge to flyweight champion Sunny Edwards on behalf of Jesse ‘Bam’ Rodriguez.
Robert Garcia, who will be in Joshua’s corner for the Rage on the Red Sea against Oleksandr Usyk in Saudi Arabia next month, also trains the super flyweight world champion Rodriguez.
Garcia wants Rodriguez to move down to flyweight and says he would keen for his charge to take on IBF champ Edwards in the UK.
Edwards has been hunting down a unification fight with Julio Cesar Martinez but Rodriguez moving down a weight division could change his plans.
“I want him to come down to 112lbs and challenge one of the champions,” Garcia told Boxing UK.
“I know there’s Rey Martinez as the first option, he’s Mexican and holds the WBC belt, but he’s had problems making weight and cancelling fights.
“I know there is a champion [Sunny Edwards], here in the UK, that holds one of the titles. We are happy to come here and challenge him in his hometown.
“112lbs is where Jesse belongs, and it would be great to come here to the UK and challenge for that title. I am more than happy for him to take that challenge.”
